Starting school for the first time

You will need to apply for a place at the school you would like your child to attend – it doesn’t happen automatically. You can name a maximum of three different schools.

Listing more than one:

• won’t affect your first preference – we always offer the highest we can, and

• will increase your chances of an offer at a school you prefer.

Read the Admissions rules to find out what is and isn’t taken into account.

Flexible options and summer-born children

By law, the latest your child can start school (that is, their compulsory school age) is at the start of the term which follows their fifth birthday.

In general, children start school in the Autumn term after their fourth birthday.

There are some flexible options available such as part time attendance and delayed start dates.

Read the page on Admissions for summer-born children on the East Sussex County Council website to see full details of the options that are available to you. For in year applications and admissions appeal timetable, please see: https://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/educationandlearning/schools/admissions/
